BAYONNE

A gothic cathedral from the 12th century, a cloister from the 17th century, remains of an old castle... Bayonne is all that. At its heart is the Sainte-Marie cathedral, the majestic church in which the cloister is nestled. Its two stone spires can be seen from everywhere, emerging from a compact mass of tiled roofs. The rest of the city has red half-timbered facades, wisely lined up along the quays. The Basque capital is located between the Nive, the Basque river, and the Adour, the Gascon river; it lies right in the junction of the two. The Basque Museum in an old bourgeois house made of stones of Mousserolles and façade from the 17th century, at the entrance of the Petit Bayonne. In the winding streets leading up to the cathedral, you find the authentic prints of the bayadère canvases, original Basque linen to cover animals to protect them from the sun or the hand-foamed chocolate of the Maison Cazenave, an ancestral custom.
